ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - Richmond started Thursday's Atlantic 10 quarterfinal game hot, making five of its first nine shots and holding Saint Joseph's to six point over the first eight minutes. For the remaining 32 minutes it was the Hawks making shots and the Spiders struggling offensively in a 61-47 loss at Boardwalk Hall.
Fourth-seeded Richmond played well early, but after the Spiders took a 12-6 lead with 12:53 left in the first half, the Hawks would go on a 16-0 run to take a 22-12 lead with 6:22 remaining.
The Spiders, who had a first-round bye in the A-10 Tournament, came back to cut the gap to two on a three-pointer by Kevin Anderson with 1:39 left in the first half. But Pat Calathes quickly answered with a three-pointer and after a Richmond turnover, Rob Ferguson beat the shot clock buzzer with a three-pointer to open up an eight-point halftime lead.
Ferguson led four Hawks in double-figures with 16 points, making all six of his field goal attempts including three treys. Ahmad Nivins had 13 points, Tasheed Carr had 12 and Calathes had 11.
The fifth-seeded Hawks, who were in second place for almost the entire conference schedule before losing a few games down the stretch, advanced to the semifinals to play No. 10 ranked Xavier (27-5). The top-seeded Musketeers defeated Dayton 74-65 in the opening quarterfinal. Saint Joseph's and Xavier split two games earlier this season, with the Hawks ending the Musketeers' 11-game winning streak earlier this month.
Freshman Kevin Anderson had 16 points for Richmond (16-14), which was limited to 37 percent shooting from the field.
Sophomore Dan Geriot, who led the Spiders with a 14.2 point average, was limited to nine points on 4-of-13 shooting. Sophomore David Gonzalvez had two points, 10 below his average.
Richmond will wait to see if they receive a post-season tournament invitation on Sunday night.
