Richmond's Outdoor Track & Field Season Underway At Wake

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Richmond track and field team opened is 2008 outdoor season Friday at the Wake Forest Invitational and Mary Bertram led the way with a bronze-medal finish in the 10,000m. In other action, Megan Ney took third in the heptathlon at the Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina. Action wraps up Saturday at Wake.
Ney scored 4189 points in the meet to capture the bronze medal. She won three over the seven events that comprise the heptathlon - the high jump (1.65m), the 200m (26.43) and the long jump (5.55m).
At the Wake Forest meet, Mary Bertram opened the first day of the meet by taking the bronze in the 10,000m run in a time of 38:32.11. Shelby Faircloth also faired well in the distance events, taking seven in the 5,000m (18:09.96).
In the field events, Samella Karoma was 17th in the shot put (12.16m) and took 26th in the hammer throw (38.27m). Monica Howard was 33rd in the shot (10.80m) and 25th in the hammer (38.59m). X'auntasia Johnson was 10th in the triple jump (11.25m).
Marissa White finished 33rd in both the 100m dash (12.73) and 100m hurdles (15.83). Jasmine Cottle was 22nd in the 400m (59.34), while Tara Markey was 27th (59.99).
For the men, Neil Slotterback took 10th in the javelin with a throw of 58.94m.
