DURHAM, N.C. - Richmond senior pitcher Alex Hale was selected as one of the nation's Top 30 senior prospects in the latest edition of Baseball America. Hale was drafted by the Angels in the 44th round last season and was an All-Atlantic 10 selection after leading the Spiders with eight wins and 93 strikeouts as a junior.
The Omaha, Neb. native is already 3-0 for Richmond in 2008, earning all three wins with nine innings of scoreless relief out of the bullpen. Hale has allowed just three hits with 10 strikeouts in his four appearances this season.
Hale was selected No. 29 on the list of 50 seniors considered by Baseball America to be the nation's leading senior prospects. It also chose 50 freshmen, 50 sophomores and 50 juniors. The Spider was the only A-10 player to make the lists.
In last season's draft, the right-handed pitcher was selected the Anaheim Angels in the 44th round, becoming the second of three Spiders drafted in 2008 and the 27th since 1995. Former 1B Joe Mahoney went to Baltimore in the sixth-round and signed with the Orioles. Current freshman Billy Falasco was taken in the 47th round, but like Hale, chose to stay with Richmond.
Hale, who caught for Richmond until the middle of his sophomore season, finished his junior campaign with an 8-2 mark and the team's third-leading ERA at 4.53. The starter was 6-1 against the A-10, which included a 7.1-inning, six-strikeout, one-earned-run performance in the Spiders' A-10 Championship first-round win over St. Bonaventure.
The Spiders are home this weekend to host Princeton in a three-game set at Pitt Field. Saturday's doubleheader starts at noon, with Sunday's game set for 1 p.m.
