UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond freshman Kevin Anderson was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for the fourth-straight week and the sixth time in the last eight weeks after averaging 17.0 points and 2.5 rebounds as the Spiders split two games on the week.
Only four players in Atlantic 10 history have earned the award more times than Anderson's six Rookie of the Week honors.
The 5-foot-11 Anderson is one of the favorites to win the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year award, which will be announced Monday.
He scored 14 points, 12 of them coming in the second half, as the Spiders defeated Fordham on Wednesday night. Anderson had 20 points, one shy of his career high, in a loss to No. 8 Xavier on Saturday. He is averaging 13.5 points in the second half of the last four games.
Anderson is third on the Spiders in scoring at 10.5 points per game. He leads the team and is 15th in the Atlantic 10 in assists (3.03 apg) and leads the team and is second in the league in steals (1.79 spg). The Duluth, Ga. native is 10th in the Atlantic 10 in assist/turnover ratio (1.40) and fifth in the conference in minutes played (34.79 mpg).
Anderson is one of four Spiders that have earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week in the past two seasons. Fellow freshman Kevin Smith was named Rookie of the Week earlier this season, while sophomores Dan Geriot and David Gonzalvez each earned the award last season.
Richmond finished the regular season at 16-13 overall and in fourth place in the Atlantic 10 with a 9-7 league mark. The Spiders are the fourth seed in the Atlantic 10 Tournament and have a bye in the first round. Richmond will play the winner of fifth-seeded Saint Joseph's and 12th seed Fordham on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
