CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Megan Ney captured the gold medal in the women's high jump to lead the University of Richmond track & field team at the Lou Onesty Invitational host by the University of Virginia this weekend in Charlottesville, Va. Ney broke the school record with her jump of 1.70m, while achieving an ECAC qualifying mark.
Ney's jump of 1.70m was good for Richmond's only gold in the meet and set a new school record for the Spiders.
"Obviously that was a great event for Megan and the best we've seen her look," said women's head coach Lori Taylor. "She had a nice attempt at the NCAA regional mark and we're very happy with how she's been progressing to this point in the season."
Also for the women, the Spiders continued to impress in the field events as Monica Howard was sixth in the discus (41.87m), 10th in the javelin (36.59m), 17th in the shot put (11.05m) and 21st in the hammer (39.72m).
Samella Koroma took 11th in the discus (37.00m), 13th in the hammer (42.47m) and was 13th in the shot put (12.18m).
On the track, Tara Markey turned in a solid fifth-place showing to pace three Spiders in the 800m. Battling high winds, Markey posted a time of 2:16.67 to finish fifth, followed by Diana Filtz in seventh (2:18.95) and Paloma Krakower in 10th (2:20.61).
Jasmine Major took eighth in the 100m (12.64) and followed that up with a 14th-place showing in the 100m hurdles (14.75).
Three Spiders placed in the 1,500, lead by the 16th-place showing from Jennifer Ennis in a time of 4:49.44. Erin Lunny was 19th (4:51.46) and Kylee Shuler was 20th (4:51.50).
The women's 4x400m relay took sixth in a time of 3:53.08, while the women's 4x100m relay was 12th (49.08).
On the men's side, Jon Wilson took eighth in the 1,500m run (4:00.46), followed by Tim Quinn in ninth-place with a time of 4:01.03.
Jeff Strojny's 24th-place showing led five Spider runners in the men's 800m (1:57.82). Sean Welsh was 34th (1:59.16), followed by Greg Hoffman a spot back (1:59.24), Brendan Regan in 41st (2:00.62) and Derek Jensen in 42nd (2:00.62).
Neil Slotterback tossed the javelin 49.01m, a mark that was good for 12th.
"Overall we're very happy with how everyone is progressing with three weeks remaining until the conference championship," said men's head coach Steve Taylor. "I'm pleased with how we ran today. We had to battle the wind and the elements, but that's outdoor track for you."
The Spiders return to action next weekend, splitting the squad between three different meets.
