WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Richmond women's golf team is in seventh place, three shots out of sixth, after Friday's first round of the 2008 CAA Women's Golf Championship, being played at the Golden Horseshoe Green Course.
Richmond shot a 36-over-par 324 Friday, putting them three shots behind sixth-place Towson. The second round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Saturday, with the final round taking place on Sunday. The Spiders will tee off beginning at 10:20 Saturday morning.
"We started off a little bit nervous. I saw some great shots on the golf course and I saw some not so great shots," Richmond coach Leighann Albaugh said. "Hopefully we'll have a lot more great shots tomorrow and the nerves won't be as strong. I think we've got a lot of room to improve. We definitely can come back and play better tomorrow. We're better than what we played today."
Richmond sophomore Lauren Folgosa and freshman Jillian Fraccola are tied for 27th after shooting 7-over-par 79s on par-72, 6,150-yard Green Course.
Folgosa shot a 39 on the front nine and 40 on the back.
"I had a pretty good start, but I wish I would have putted a little better than I had," Folgosa said. "That was the bad part of my day. I hit 14 greens (in regulation), I was hitting irons solid. My short game was my problem."
Fraccola had a 41 on the front and a 2-over 38 on the back nine.
"I drove the ball really well, that's usually my strength of the game," Folgosa said. "I was hitting my irons pretty good, I wasn't hitting them that close for many birdie opportunities, but I hit a lot of greens today, so that was good. I really couldn't get the speed of the greens today so my putting was off. I just need to work on my putting for tomorrow and that will probably bring me down a couple of strokes."
Freshman Christina Gray is tied for 33rd after shooting an 82. Sophomore Anne Sprick carded an 84 and is tied for 37th, while senior Alex Latimer is tied for 46th with an 89.
"I think we could have done a lot better than we did today," Folgosa said. "I think everybody is hitting the ball well and we can come back stronger tomorrow."
