UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond freshman point guard Kevin Anderson was named the Commonwealth of Virginia's Rookie of the Year in voting conducted among the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association (VaSID).
This is the second Rookie of the Year award for Anderson, who received the honor over such state standouts as Virginia Tech's All-ACC Freshman Team selection Jeff Allen. Anderson was also named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and was tabbed to the conference's All Rookie Team.
"This is another great honor for Kevin," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "There were many talented rookies making key contributions around the state, so to be selected for this award is a testament to what Kevin brought to our team. He had a tremendous first year and we look forward to his continued improvement in the coming seasons."
The 5-foot-11 true freshman point guard from Duluth, Ga. was third on the Spiders in scoring, averaging 10.7 points per game. He led the team in assists (3.0 apg) and steals (1.8 spg), ranking third in the Atlantic 10 in steals. He was 11th in the conference in assist/turnover ratio (1.38).
Only four players in Atlantic 10 history earned conference Rookie of the Week honors more than the six times Anderson received the award.
Anderson helped lead the Spiders to a fourth-place finish in the Atlantic 10, equaling Richmond's best finish in seven years as a conference member. Richmond won 16 games, earned a first-round bye in the conference tournament and played in the post-season College Basketball Invitational.
