UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond baseball team couldn't overcome an early 5-0 deficit and fell to visiting St. Bonaventure, 14-6, at Pitt Field Friday afternoon. Hank Coogan went three-for-four, while Mike Mergenthaler and Ryan Grant each had two hits for the Spiders, who bring the regular season to a close Saturday versus the Bonnies at noon.
Saturday marks Senior Day for the Spiders and its five graduating seniors - Rob Berzinskas, Coogan, Alex Hale, Austin Reilly and Joe White - will be honored in a pregame ceremony.
Richmond (19-31-2, 9-15-1) rallied with five runs over the final two innings Friday, but left the bases loaded twice and stranded 12 in the contest. Coogan's three hits improved the senior's average to a team-leading .364 on the season.
In his final game as a Spider, Hale suffered just his second loss of the season (4-2) after allowing five earned runs on 11 hits in the ballgame. But the Bonnies (29-21, 15-11) capitalized with four runs in the third thanks to four infield singes and a Richmond error. Three runs of the runs were unearned of Hale.
The Spiders got a run back in the fifth on Reilly's RBI, making the score 6-1 and White and Coogan each drove in runs in the eighth inning, but the damage had been done by SBU with two runs in each the fifth, sixth and seventh frames.
A late rally by Richmond plated three runs in the ninth on consecutive RBIs from Mergenthaler, Reilly and Boliek after Billy Falasco and Grant led off with walks.
Cody Vincent pitched five strong innings for the Bonnies to get the win (6-5). He allowed an unearned runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Josh Sova had three of Bona's 19 hits and launched a two-run homer in the sixth.
