Ney's Long Jump Silver Leads Spiders Saturday At A-10 Championship

AMHERST, Mass. - The University of Richmond outdoor track & field team captured four medals, led by the silver from Megan Ney in the long jump, Saturday as action began at the 2008 Atlantic 10 Championship in Amherst, Mass. The men are in sixth and the women are seventh heading to Sunday's final day, with each team six points out of fourth place.

Ney, a sophomore from McLean, Va., locked up the silver medal in the long jump with a career-high mark of 5.76m. She also posted the second-best mark in the high jump (1.60m) and finished in a tie for fourth.
The women's 4x800m relay of Diana Filtz, Paloma Krakower, Nicol Traynor and Tara Markey were edged at the wire by second-place Saint Louis and took the bronze in a time of 9:06.92.
Sophomore Andrew Benford captured the first of two bronze medals for the men on Saturday by clocking a 9:04.35 in the 3,000m steeplechase. The sophomore ran a sub-nine-minute in this same event last week at the Penn Relays to clinch an NCAA Regional spot.
In the discus, junior Pierre Turner, who also plays football for the Spiders, posted a season-best throw of 45.97m to win the bronze medal.
Also for the women, senior Kylee Schuler had a strong showing in the 10k, finishing fourth in a time of 37:02.70 and leading three Spiders in the event. Freshman Erin Lunny (37:51.24) was ninth and junior Mary Bertram (38:33.76) was 13th.
Junior Marissa White was sixth in the preliminaries of the 100m hurdles (15.29) and advanced to Sunday's final, but missed the finals cut with a 15th-place finish (13.11) in the 100m prelims. Sophomore JoAnna Ubiwa (13.47) and junior Stefanie Lapp (13.48) also missed the 100m finals cut.
The 3,000m steeplechase saw senior Shelby Faircloth finish ninth (11:32.34), while freshman X'auntasia Johnson was 14th in the long jump (5.17m). Freshman Samella Koroma was ninth in the discus (35.92m) and 11th in the hammer (40.74m) with classmate Monica Howard finishing 10th in the hammer (41,19m) and 13th in the discus (34.85m).
On the men's side, sophomore Matt Llano took fourth in a very competitive 10k with a time of 30:18.64 - an event in which the top four places each eclipsed the previous A-10 Championship record of 30:35.82 set in 2005. Massachusetts' Andrew McCann won Saturday with his new standard of 30:04.87. Senior Hunter Willis was ninth in the 10k (31:05.97).
The 4x800 relay of Sean Welsh, Greg Hoffman, Jeff Strojny and Derek Jensen took sixth, finishing in 7:46.64.
Junior Chris Kondorossy was 12th in discus (36.11m) and 13th in the hammer (39.17m). Sophomore David Hille missed the finals cut in the 100m with his time of 11.79.
Despite chilly conditions and intermittent periods of rain, five meet records were established on the opening day of competition at UMass' Track & Field Complex.
Vying for its seventh men's title in eight years, defending champion Rhode Island leads with 75 points after seven events. Charlotte is second with 51 points, followed by Duquesne (36), Massachusetts (25) and La Salle (25), Fordham (17), Temple (14), Richmond (14), Saint Joseph's (nine) and Xavier (four).
After eight events, Rhode Island leads the women's Championship with a total of 53.5 points, while Dayton is second with 51.5 points. Two-time defending champion Charlotte is third with 47points, followed by Massachusetts (29) and La Salle (29), Temple (25), Richmond (23), Duquesne (17.5), Xavier (13), Saint Louis (9.5), Saint Joseph's (eight) and Fordham (six).
Action commences at 8:45 a.m. Sunday with the 110m hurdles in the men's decathlon, followed by the women's javelin at 9 a.m.
