Traynor, Howard Among Top Freshmen Performers Friday At NCAA Regional

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Freshmen Nicol Traynor and Monica Howard began competition in the 2008 NCAA East Regional Championship Friday night, hosted by Florida State University in Tallahassee. Traynor took 29th in the 5,000m, while Howard was 31st in the javelin.
Sophomore Andrew Benford and senior Jonathan Molz wrap things up for the Spiders Saturday night in the 3,000m steeplechase. Benford also qualified in the 5,000m but did not race Friday night in preparation for the steeplechase.
Traynor was one just five freshmen in the field of 34 runners and the Baskin Ridge, N.J. native took 29th overall with a time of 17:45.58. She qualified at the A-10 Championship with a bronze-medal winning time of 16:42.96, which would have been just four seconds shy of the top 10 Friday.
Howard posted a mark of 30.47m in the javelin and the native of Wilmington, Ohio placed 31st in a field that featured just eight freshmen. She posted a mark of 27.01m on her first throw, 30.47m on her second but fouled on her third and final attempt.
Junior Tasmin Fanning from Virginia Tech was the Regional Champion in the 5,000m with a time of 16:11.42 - winning by nearly four seconds. Penn State freshman Karlee McQuillen won the javelin with a mark off 53.60m.
