University of Richmond, Va. -
The Richmond women's soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 2-1 victory over the James Madison Dukes Sunday night at First Market Stadium.
The game marked the first University of Richmond sporting event for the 2008-09 season.
"The crowd played a huge part in the game," Richmond head coach Peter Albright said. "It was great to see over 400 student-athletes cheering for us. It's really a statement about how we can be as a school. I'm proud to be a part of Richmond, and glad we could get the win."
The Spiders struck first when senior back Sarah Hilt passed from the end line to the feet of senior forward Jessie Wolfe, who scored from close range at the 23:34 mark in the first half.
The Dukes were held scoreless in the first half due to the aggressive play of freshmen midfielder Kris Lescalleet and senior back Julia Bizer.
"We got good play out of Kris tonight," Albright said. "She was holding court for us at center-mid, which really gave us control over the field. Bizer marked Cate Tisinger, an All-American, and really defended her well."
The Spiders final goal came at the 88th minute, as Hilt again assisted to junior midfielder Kelsey Rdzanek to seal the win.
JMU's lone goal came in the 90th minute, when sophomore Teresa Rynier crossed from the end line to the junior midfielder Ashley Flateland for the goal.
The Spiders continue their home play next Friday night as the cross-town rival VCU Rams come to First Market Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
Live coverage, including gametracker and free video streaming on SpiderTV, will be available for the game.
