UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Home games with Wake Forest, Xavier and Saint Joseph's, a road trip to Virginia Tech and an appearance in the CBE Classic highlight the 2008-09 Richmond men's basketball schedule.
"We feel we have put together a very competitive non-conference schedule to prepare us for conference play in one of toughest league's in the country," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "We play in the prestigious CBE Classic and will face two ACC teams, along with several other geographical rivals."
The Spiders could still add one more game to the schedule, which currently has them opening the season on Tuesday, Nov. 18 in the CBE Classic at an opponent to be announced. Richmond will play four games in the tournament, playing three in a round robin format Nov. 24-26. The CBE Classic has not finalized the field and will be announcing the pairings in the coming weeks.
Richmond will play five weekend home conference games, including the regular-season finale against Xavier on March 7.
In conference play, Richmond will play Charlotte, George Washington and Saint Louis in home-and-home series and face the remainder of the A-10 teams once.
The Spiders finished fourth in the Atlantic 10 last season and only graduated two seniors. Junior Dan Geriot will miss the season due to a knee injury, but the Spiders had eight different players score in double-figures in four games on a recent European summer trip.
"We had a good season last year, but we need to continue to progress," Mooney said. "While we will not have Dan Geriot, I think you will see a deeper team this year with more players who can score for us. We just returned from a trip to Spain where we saw a lot of great things from the guys, especially on the offensive end. It also gave us a chance to see what we need to work on for the coming season."
