Lessing Tied For Sixth, Spiders In Fifth After First Day Of Rutherford

FARMINGTON, Pa. - Senior Lawrence Lessing is tied for sixth and the Richmond men's golf team is tied for fifth after the first round of Penn State's Rutherford Intercollegiate at Nemacolin's Woods Mystic Rock course.
The second round of the Rutherford Intercollegiate will be played on Monday and the third and final round is on Tuesday.
The Spiders shot a 15-over-par 303 which puts them in a tie with Missouri for fifth, five strokes behind second-place Purdue. Penn State (+12) is in third, three strokes ahead of Richmond, and VCU is in fourth at 13-over. Miami of Ohio is in first place after shooting a 1-over 289 on the par-72, 7,269-yard course.
"We wanted to get off to a better start today, but it was the first round of the season," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "Lawrence played extremely well, but we need to improve tomorrow."
Lessing is tied for sixth after shooting a 1-over-par 73 with four birdies on the day. Lessing is four shots behind the lead, Aaron Crist of Miami, who shot a 3-under 69.
"Lawrence was tremendous today," Decker said. "He really put together a great round to start the season."
Junior Grant Rafield shot a 3-over 75 and is tied for 14th, while fellow senior Tim Courtney carded a 77 and is tied for 29th. Sophomore Sam Beach is tied for 38th at 5-over 78 and junior Robert Lindstrom is tied for 54th at 9-over 81.
