UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond sophomore Christina Gray was named the CAA Women's Golf Player of the Week after notching the best score in school history to finish second at the Towson Invitational on Tuesday.
Gray shot 69 in the second round, the lowest 18-hole score in the seven-year history of the Spider women's golf program. Her second-plaace finish is the best individual finish and she was just one shot off the highest score to par (-2).
The Tampa, Fla. native had shot a 76 in the opening round as she finished the tournament as the runner-up at 5-over-par 145.
"This is a tremendous honor for Christina," Richmond head coach Leighann Albaugh said. "She worked really hard on her game over the summer and it showed. She's only played one tournament in her sophomore year, but she proved yesterday what she is capable of on the golf course. We look forward to more success from her."
She led the Spiders to a second-place finish at the Towson Invitational, after entering the final round in fifth place. Gray's second-round 69 and the Spiders' 305 on Tuesday were the best rounds of the tournament.
The Spiders return to action this Sunday at the College of Charleston's Cougar Classic. The tournament will consist of 18 holes per day from Sunday through Tuesday.
