RICHMOND (Roanoke Times) - With his light, compact frame and quick strides, Tim Smith seems made for running mountains.
But it's what's inside that really makes the difference.
"The first time I saw him race I said, 'This guy has the heart of a champion,' " said Steve Taylor, the head track and field coach at the University of Richmond, where Smith is now running. "He's just so tough.
"He always gets after it."
This weekend Smith will be getting after it in Switzerland, where he's running in the 24th World Mountain Running championship at the Sierra Crans-Montana ski area.
A former running standout from Cave Spring High School, Smith is one of four members of the U.S. team's junior squad.
