The Spiders (3-1-0) lose their first game of the season to the College of Charleston Cougars (5-0-0) in the adidas Davidson College Tournament Friday afternoon in Davidson, N.C.
The Cougars struck early, as junior Christy Barrow scored from an assist by senior Megan Manthey in the 11th minute of the game.
Manthey then converted a penalty kick in the 24th minute of play after a Richmond foul. The final goal came at the 37:32 mark, when sophomore Amanda Raymond scored unassisted.
The Spiders never fully recovered from the Cougars' first-half attack.
"We had trouble getting started," head coach Peter Albright said. "The early goals really put us behind, but we played much better in the second half."
The Spiders held the College of Charleston scoreless in the second half, as freshman goalkeeper Andrea Young recorded four saves on the night. Richmond played aggressively, notching 19 shots to the Cougars' 9.
The Spiders return to action Sunday, where they will face-off against host Davidson College. Kick-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
