UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team had a seven-point lead with under three minutes to play, but St. Bonaventure closed the game on an 11-0 run to win 71-67 on Saturday night in the Robins Center.
In a game that featured multiple runs by each team, it was the Bonnies who put together the last one as them improved to 11-6 overall and 2-2 in the Atlantic 10. Richmond had gone on a 9-2 run to take a 67-60 lead on a three-pointer with 2:55 to play.
St. Bonaventure's Maurice Thomas, who had a game-high 25 points, made two free throws and a layup to close the gap to three and then Jonathan Hall (15 points) made two free throws to slice the gap to one.
Hall then made a driving layup and was fouled with 23 seconds left. Hall's made free throw put the Bonnies up 69-67 and after the Spiders did not score on the ensuing possession, Chris Matthews made two free throws to ice the game.
"St. Bonaventure played a good and aggressive game," Chris Mooney said. "There were stretches where we looked very, very good and unfortunately we weren't able to close out the game. I'm disappointed with our execution down the stretch."
Sophomore Kevin Anderson led four Spiders in double-figures with 15 points, while junior Ryan Butler had a season-high 14 points. Freshman Francis-Cedric Martel had a career-high 13 points and sophomore also had 13 points.
The Spiders had their second worst shooting night of the season, connecting on 40.7 percent of their shots. That comes on the heels of Richmond's lowest shooting percentage of the season at Virginia Tech.
Richmond went 8-for-26 from behind the three-point arc, after making just 3-of-22 against Virginia Tech. St. Bonaventure out-rebounded the Spiders 38-26 and outscored Richmond 38-24 in the paint.
The Spiders remain at home, hosting Rhode Island on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
