Men's Golf Takes Second At Big 5 Invitational

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Richmond men's golf team posted its third top-2 finish in four tournaments so far this fall, taking second at the Big 5 Invitational completed Sunday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
The Spiders had a four-shot lead after one round of the 36-hole tournament, but their bid to win a second-straight tournament was spoiled by Campbell shooting a final round 290 Sunday to finish four shots ahead of the Richmond to win the tournament title.
Richmond shot a 293 in Saturday's opening round and a 298 on Sunday to finish at 591, while Campbell shot a 297 and 290 for a 587.
"We weren't able to close it out today," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. " The Spiders won the Frank Landrey Invitational last Tuesday and finished second at the Missouri Tiger Invitational to open the fall season.
Freshman Daniel Walker led the Spiders, tying for fourth at 3-over-par 145 to post his third top-10 finish in four collegiate tournaments. The Earlysville, Va. native shot a 1-over 72 in the first round and a 2-over 73 in the second to post his second-straight top-5 finish after taking third at the Landrey Invitational on Monday.
Junior Michael Shrader tied for 11th at 6-over 148 after rounds of 72 and 76. Senior Robert Lindstrom posted his fourth top-20 finish in as many tournaments, tying for 16th at 7-over 149 (74-75).
Freshman Nick Austin tied for 32nd at 10-over 152 (78-74) and junior Sam Beach tied for 34th at 12-over 154 (75-79).
The Spiders conclude the 2009 fall season at the Georgetown Invitational, Oct. 19-20.
