HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. - Freshman Daniel Walker is in second place with a 2-under-par 69 and the Richmond men's golf team is just four shots off the lead after the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship, played Friday at Mission In Golf & Tennis Resort.
The Spiders finished at 8-over-par 292, just four shots behind four-time defending champion Charlotte, which shot a 4-over 288. George Washington is in third place at 14-over 298 and Xavier is in fourth at 18-over 302 in the 12-team field.
"We obviously got off to a great start and put ourselves in great shape heading into the second day," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "Daniel really stepped up for a freshman playing his first round at the A-10 Championship."
Walker matched his career-low round, shooting his fourth sub-par round of the season thanks to seven birdies. At 2-under 69 he is two shots behind defending champion Corey Nagy of Charlotte.
"I felt really comfortable today," Walker said. "I made a lot of birdies and while I was not as precise as I would have liked, overall I can't complain. I putted really well and while I made a couple mistakes, overall I was pleased."
Walker is one shot ahead of a two-way tie for third and Richmond senior Robert Lindstrom is in a two-way tie for fifth at 1-over-par 72. Spider junior Sam Beach is tied for ninth at 3-over 74 and freshman Nick Austin is tied for 23rd at 6-over 77. Junior Michael Shrader is tied for 40th at 11-over-par 82.
The second round of the tournament will be played Saturday and the final round will be played Sunday.
