UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Freshman Shondel Archer notched her team-leading seventh goal early in the first half en route to Richmond's (7-5-1, 3-1-0) 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's (4-5-3, 1-2-1) Sunday afternoon at Ukrop Park.
Archer tallied the score off a cross pass from sophomore midfielder Bridget Kinealy in the game's 13th minute. Richmond played much of the first frame deep in Hawks' territory, recording 10 first-half shots.
"We came out with great energy," said head coach Peter Albright. "Our players came out prepared. We did a good job of keeping the action in their end. Kristen Schmitt had a great game for us. She played with maturity at the attack and I'm really proud of her."
Saint Joseph's threatened in the closing minutes, but senior center midfielder Jen Ruhe always seemed to answer the Hawks' attack.
"Jenny's playing so well for us," said Albright. "I'm happy with our six-point weekend. We've put ourselves in a good position heading to GW next weekend."
Richmond outshot the Hawks by a commanding 25-13 margin. Freshman forward LeighAnne Baxter led the Spiders with five shots. Sophomore goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco secured four saves in the net.
The Spiders return to action next weekend at George Washington. Kick-off is 2:00 p.m. Saturday.
