UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Despite outshooting the Minutewomen 15-8, including 9-1 in the second half, the Richmond women's soccer team fell to UMass, 1-0 Sunday afternoon in Amherst, Mass. Senior Kelsey Rdzanek and freshman Shondel Archer led Richmond with three shots apiece.
Massachusetts tallied the only score of the game in the 37th minute when Lauren Yelinek scored off a Meredith Fox and Lindsay DiOrio assist from eight yards out.
"The game went much the same way as the season," said head coach Peter Albright. "We played very well, but we could not get the goal, or the result we needed."
In addition to the 15-8 advantage on shots, the Spiders earned a 8-1 edge on corner kicks. Nine different Spiders recorded a shot, with Rdzanek and Archer leading the charge.
"We finished the game with our season's most dominant second-half performance, outshooting UMass 9-1 and earning an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks," said Albright. "Shondel had two point blank chances turned away, and Kelsey hit the crossbar with a header. It was a game that we deserved to win, but we didn't get the goal."
Richmond ended its season after defeating a ranked opponent for the first time since 2006, in a 3-0 victory over No. 25 JMU in the season opener. The Spiders won four straight in conference play and freshmen Archer and Natalie LeClair each earned Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week honors.
