Nov. 14, 2009
Team Notes
With the win, Richmond extended its road winning streak to 12-consecutive games. That streak is a school record and the longest road winning streak in college football.
Richmond's win, along with William & Mary's win over New Hampshire today sets the stage for a pivotal showdown for the Capital Cup next Saturday between Spiders (9-1) and the Tribe (9-1) at UR Stadium. The 18 combined wins between the teams represents the most in the 118-game history of the series.
Richmond made its first football visit to Georgetown since the 1900 season. That game was the Spiders' worst loss in program history - an 84-0 shutout to the Hoyas. The points scored by Richmond Saturday were the first-ever scored by Richmond at Georgetown.
The Spiders were playing Saturday at Georgetown following a loss for the first time in 399 days - and improved to 4-0 under head coach Mike London following a defeat. Richmond has won those four games by an average of 30 points.
Those four "bounce-back" wins under London are: 2008 vs. Towson (45-14), 2008 vs. VMI (56-16), 2008 vs. UMass (30-15) and 2009 vs. Georgetown (49-10).
Richmond's first three touchdowns each came on possessions following Georgetown turnovers and the Spiders own a 107-24 (+83) advantage this season in points-off-turnover scoring this season.
Richmond is the most balanced team in CAA Football in scoring distribution, and seven different Spiders scored the team's seven TDs on Saturday.
The 49 points by the Spiders are their most since posting 56 on VMI in a 56-16 win last season.
Player Notes
The 94-yard interception return for TD by Tremayne Graham ranks as tied for the fifth-longest in school history. Five other Spiders also had returns of 94 yards, while three Spiders returned kicks 100 yards in school history and one had a 99-yard return.
Graham's return was his second TD of the season (had an INT return at Towson) and the first KO return for TD by Richmond since Justin Rogers versus New Hampshire in 2007 (84 yards).
Senior QB Eric Ward played just the first half and finished with 85 yards passing and two TDs. He needs just one more yard passing to crack the CAA Football career top-10 list.
Redshirt freshman QB John Laub played the second half and completed his first six passes of the game - his first career completions. Laub, who also scored his first career TD on a run, finished nine-of-15 for 122 yards.
Senior SS Michael Ireland intercepted his team-leading third pass of the season, which set up the Spiders second score. It was his eighth career INT.
