Howard's FG Series
William & Mary Head Coach Jimmye Laycock
Opening Statement:
"It was a tough game. Both teams came out and competed. They were able to get the one kick at the end. Other than that, I thought we played hard. I thought we played well. We were in some tough positions field-position wise. I wish we could've taken advantage of that last interception. It was a hard-fought game between two good teams."
The 52-yard field-goal attempt:
"The yardage was well within [kicker Brian Pate] range. He kicked it pretty good it was just a little bit short."
Close game situations:
"You don't know anything going into a game other than you have to prepare the best way you can. I thought we played well today. We played a very good team and you have to be ready for a close game. It was a close, heartfelt game. It came down to the very end and they got it."
Richmond's defense:
"I knew it was going to be tough. They're very, very good up front. I was concerned about that. I thought the second half we played a little bit better, but they're good up front."
On William & Mary's defense:
"I thought they played very well. They made some big stops in the red zone. I thought they played outstanding. They probably played the best they have all year."
Frustrations with the offense:
"Offensively, I wish we could've run the ball better. We had some big drops out there. When you're playing a good team like that, you've got to catch the ball. You have to do all those little things. "
On Mike London:
"Mike's done a great job. He's a fine coach. I've stayed in contact with him, we're friends. He's a very classy person. "
Richmond Head Coach Mike London
Opening statement:
"What a college football game that was. Once again, the last two [games] we've played here have been filled with a gamut of emotions. This particular time, we're on the high side of it. Having Andrew [Howard] make that field goal with no time left was truly amazing. I'm really honored and blessed to be with a team that has good guys. It is such a treat to be in the locker room and be around these guys to see how much football means to them. These young men played their hearts out, played through adversity but still came through. The conventional wisdom was to take Andrew [Howard] out. I thought about it after the second quarter and was getting our young place kicker [Wil Kamin] ready, but something told me to stick with the veteran. Andrew told me in the locker room `Coach, my head's in it'. I thought if we were in that position again, I've got to rely on my veterans. I'm very proud of these guys representing the school."
On both team's defenses:
"I thought both teams played well. When you look at the statistics, we're very similar. I thought this was going to be a back and forth game and field position was going to be critical, as it was. What a great college football game that was today. The way the game was played came down to exactly what I thought it would come down to. "
Reaction to game-winning field goal:
"I was bowing on the grass. I didn't see [the kick] happen. It was one of those things if I heard everyone yell I would know we made it. It was just great to get up and get a glimpse of the players rushing the field. That celebration was one of those memorable moments, one of the `Kodak' moments. I'm very happy for Andrew and the team."
Coaching against William & Mary Head Coach Jimmye Laycock:
"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Coach Laycock. He's a great coach with a good team. That's a great football team and they're going to be in the playoffs, no doubt about that. They definitely deserve it."
Senior Kicker Andrew Howard
On the game-winning field goal:
"It means so much to me. We practiced hard all week. It meant a lot to me that coach put me in the situation at the end of the game. I just kept practicing my technique and stayed focused. When coach called my name, I just ran out there and did what I had to do. The feeling [of kicking the game-winning field goal] is indescribable."
Senior Quarterback Eric Ward
On game-winning field goal:
"I have the easy job. I just have to catch the ball and put it down. Andrew did a great job and we got a great snap. It was just as simple as catching the ball and putting it down."
On being at home for play-off games:
"It's huge to get a play-off game at home. Especially considering the turnout we had today and with all the support we've been getting all year. We appreciate all the support from the fans. And it's a great feeling to know we'll be playing at least one game at home."
Senior Defensive Back Seth Williams
On supporting Andrew Howard:
"I've been talking with Andrew all week. I just told him to stay confident and have fun. I really trusted that he was going to make that kick. It would've been easy to get down on him but I've been supporting him all week. I just kept preaching to him to have fun and in the end, he came through for us."
