Spiders Improve To 4-1 With 65-52 Win Over Longwood

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Junior Kevin Anderson scored 22 points and junior Dan Geriot had 10 as the Richmond men's basketball team defeated Longwood 65-52 to get off to its best start since the 2000-01 season.
Sophomore Darrius Garrett blocked five shots and grabbed five rebounds off the bench in helping the Spiders to their fourth win in the first five games. That ties the Spiders with the 2000-01, 1990-91 and 1987-88 teams with the best five-game start since the 1985-86 team opened 5-0.
Anderson made 7-of-12 field goals and 8-of-11 free throws to finish with a game-high 22 points to go with six rebounds and three steals. The 6-foot-0 point guard has scored 20 or more points 17 times in his career, including nine of his last 12 games. He is now 36th on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 1,029 points.
Geriot made 4-of-9 field goals to finish with 10 points, while senior David Gonzalvez had seven points and Francis-Cedric Martel had six. The Spiders had eight players score at least four points.
Richmond held Longwood to 33.9 percent shooting and 52 points. In Richmond's four wins, the Spiders have held the opposition to less than 35 percent shooting and under 60 points.
Dana Smith led Longwood with 16 points and Antwan Carter had 15 points.
Richmond trailed by nine with 9:43 to play in the second half (48-39), but outscored the Lancers 26-4 to close the game.
This was Richmond's second game in the South Padre Island Invitational. The Spiders head to South Padre Island, Texas tomorrow and will play Mississippi State on Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern Time. Richmond will then play in either the championship game at 8 p.m. ET Saturday or the consolation game at 5:30 p.m. ET against either Missouri or Old Dominion.
