UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Junior Katie Holzer pulled down a season-high 13 boards as Richmond (3-1) sunk Hampton (2-1) 64-46 Tuesday afternoon at the Robins Center.
The 13 rebounds stands as a season-high for Holzer and the most of any Spider since Feb. 14, 2009 when Crystal Goring recorded 15 boards at Rhode Island.
"We wanted to dominate the boards," said Holzer. "We played really well. We communicated really well. We did a good job of getting to the open man and boxing out. It's good to be back [on the court]. I pride myself on my rebounding."
Richmond seized control of the game with 5:00 remaining in the first half by scoring seven unanswered points to boost its lead to 24-17. The Spiders owned a 24-16 rebound edge at the break and went on to record a 48-32 advantage for the game.
The Spiders continued their momentum in the second half when they started the second frame on a 10-2 run to move ahead 42-25 at the 15:29 mark. Richmond pushed its lead to as many as 20 at 58-38 with 4:54 remaining.
"Rebounding was really a point of emphasis for us in practice," said head coach Michael Shafer. "We wanted to crash the offensive boards and really limit their chances for second and third [scoring] opportunities. I'm pleased with our efforts today. Our rebounding really allowed us to get some key baskets in transition."
Shells recorded her third game-high performance of the season and now moves to 984 career points. Shells also added a game-high four assists and three steals.
Senior Danielle Bell followed Shells with 10 points, going 3-for-6 from the field. Sophomore Rachael Bilney returned with two points and played 10 minutes after having sat out the past four games with a knee injury. The Spiders dished a game-high 17 assists.
Richmond travels to Storrs, Conn. Wednesday for the WBCA Classic. The Spiders square off against ACC foe Clemson Friday at 5:00 p.m.
