UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Senior David Gonzalvez scored a season-high 25 points to lead four Spiders in double-figures as Richmond improved to 9-3 on the season, including 6-0 at home.
Only five times in 98 seasons of basketball have the Spiders started better than 9-3 and this year's team has done so with what many consider to be the strongest non-conference schedule in school history. Richmond is off to the third-best 12-game start since the 1954-55 season and it is just the fourth time since the 1954-55 season that Richmond has started 9-3 or better.
Gonzalvez made three three-pointers, giving him multiple treys for the seventh-straight game and the ninth time in 12 games this season. Gonzalvez reached 25 points for the fourth time in his career as he moved into 14th on Richmond's all-time scoring list with 1,387 points, passing Ken Daniel (1952-56). The Marietta, Ga. native is fourth on Richmond's all-time career list with 188 career three-pointers, needing 32 to tie Mike Skrocki for third.
Juniors Kevin Anderson (16), Dan Geriot (13) and Justin Harper (10) also reached double-figures, while sophomore Francis-Cedric Martel scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds.
The Spiders blocked 10 shots, led by three apiece from the 6-foot Anderson and sophomore forward Darrius Garrett. On one play in the first half, Anderson blocked a shot and after UNC-Greensboro came up with the ball, he swiped one of his four steals in the game, leading to a Spider basket on the fastbreak.
Richmond had 15 steals, giving the Spiders 23 steals compared to just 20 turnovers in the last two games. Anderson has seven steals after his four Tuesday, while Gonzalvez and Martel had three steals apiece.
Richmond shot 55.4 percent from the field (31-of-56) and tied a season high with 11 three-pointers.
The Spider defense, which held Florida to the lowest point total in a loss during Billy Donovan's 16 seasons with the Gators, have now held the opposition to 63 points or less in its nine victories.
Richmond returns to action on Monday night when the Spiders host UNC-Wilmington at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
