Former Student-Athlete Larry Rauppius Passes Away

Lawrence Hugh "Larry" Rauppius, a former student-athlete at the University of Richmond, passed away on Feb. 10, 2009, two days prior to his 72nd birthday.
The 1959 graduate played on the basketball and tennis teams and was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity.
Rauppius was preceded in death by his parents, Fred Rauppius and Ethel Murray Rauppius. He is survived by his wife, Gwyn Rauppius. He is also survived by his children, Beth Lane and her husband, Billy, Laura Rauppius McKay and her husband, Jim, Larry Rauppius Jr. and his wife, Michelle, and youngest daughter, Brently Rauppius. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren, Will, Madelyn, Joe, Libby and Jack Lane, Kyle McKay, and L.J. and Laura Rauppius.
Born in New York, Larry moved to Virginia during high school and graduated from John Marshall High School in 1954.
After graduating from Richmond, he served in the Army Reserve as 1st Lieutenant Artillery. He then pursued a career in the paper industry where he became the President and C.E.O. of B.W. Wilson Paper Co. Larry will be forever remembered for his warm inviting smile, love of family and friends, athleticism, compassion, and willingness to help others.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. both Thursday, February 12, and Friday, February 13, 2009 at the Central Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 3215 Cutshaw Ave. The funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, February 14, 2009 in the Sanctuary of First Baptist Church, Monument Avenue and the Boulevard. Interment will follow in Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
