DAYTON, Ohio - Sophomore Kevin Anderson tied a career high with 24 points, but Richmond was edged by Dayton 69-63 on Saturday night in front of 13,435 fans at UD Arena.
The Spiders were down by two at the half and, after falling behind by 13 midway through the second half, Richmond closed to within four points (57-53) with five minutes to play. Richmond had three chances to get closer, but did not convert and a three-point play by Charles Little pushed Dayton's lead back to seven.
A jumper by Anderson cut the gap to five with 1:38 to play, but Richmond would get no closer as Dayton improved to 16-0 at home this season. The Flyers (23-3, 10-2 Atlantic 10) have won all eight meetings between the two teams in Dayton.
Junior David Gonzalvez scored 16 points and junior Ryan Butler had seven points for the Spiders. Sophomore Kevin Smith had six points, while redshirt freshman Josh Duinker and freshman Francis-Cedric Martel each had five.
Chris Wright scored 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, while London Warren had 10 points for Dayton. Kurt Huelsman had eight points and seven rebounds.
Five of the Spiders' six Atlantic 10 losses have come by 10 points or less, with at triple overtime loss to Saint Louis on Feb. 8 the only conference setback coming by more than 10 points. Nine of Richmond's 13 losses this season are by single-digits.
Richmond shot 40 percent from the field, but connected on 17-of-21 free throws. Anderson made 11-of-12 from the foul line.
Dayton had a slim edge on the glass, 35-31, but the Flyers had 13 second-chance points to five for the Spiders.
Richmond (12-13, 4-6 Atlantic 10) returns to action on Wednesday at La Salle at 7 p.m.
