AMHERST, Mass. - Junior David Gonzalvez became the 37th player in Richmond basketball history to score 1,000 career points, but the Spiders lost to Massachusetts 80-71 on Wednesday in the Mullins Center.
Gonzalvez entered the game with 991 points and scored his 1,001th point on a driving layup with 4:22 left in the game. With 18 points against UMass, Gonzalvez now has 1,009 points, which passes Jonathan Baker for 36th on Richmond's scoring list. Baker finished his career with 1,002 points.
"I am proud of David, to score 1,000 points is great and to do it in your junior year is exceptional," Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. "Congratulations to David and I know he has a lot more great games to play.
Gonzalvez was the second player in the game to score his 1,000th-career point. Massachusetts' guard Chris Lowe entered the game with 999 points and finished the night with 13 points
Ricky Harris scored a game-high 24 points for UMass, making 7-of-13 field goals, including 5-of-8 three-pointers.
Richmond sophomore guard Kevin Anderson joined Gonzalvez with 18 points for the Spiders. Junior Ryan Butler, sophomore Kevin Smith and sophomore Justin Harper each had eight points.
The game was tied at 32 at the half and stayed close through the first 10 minutes of the second half, with UMass maintaining a small lead. After a Justin Harper three-pointer had Richmond within two with 9:23 left, the Minutemen went on a 10-2 run over the next 2:33 to open up a 61-51 advantage with 6:50 remaining.
Richmond cut the gap to six with 6:00 remaining on a three-pointer by Gonzalvez that gave him 999 career points, but UMass quickly had the lead back to double-figures and the Spiders would get no closer than seven the rest of the way.
"I think they were just a little bit more aggressive," Mooney said. "We have to be aggressive throughout the game, I thought they were the more aggressive team tonight, especially in pivotal plays."
Richmond led 15-8 and 17-10 in the early going, but UMass came back to take a six-point lead. The Spiders weathered the Minutemen's 15-5 run and went into the locker room tied at 32-32.
Massachusetts scored 15 second-chance points and shot 50-percent from behind the three-point arc, connecting on 9-of-18 treys.
Richmond, which dropped to 11-11 overall and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10, returns home to host Saint Louis on Sunday at 2 p.m.
