WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Christina Gray took fourth to lead the Richmond women's golf team to a second-place finish at the First Market Bank Intercollegiate at Ford's Colony Country Club.
"I'm very proud of them, they all came out this week and really stuck to the game plan. The karma was good, they were really fun to be around and I think that carried over to the golf course," Richmond head coach Leighann Albaugh said.
This was Richmond's second runner-up finish of the season, third top-5 finish of the year and fourth top-10 finish in 2008-09. The Spiders shot a 314 in the first round Saturday and a 313 in the second round Sunday to finish at 627, three strokes ahead of Charleston Southern in the 20-team tournament.
"The girls were saying that they believe the intensive short game practices we have been doing have really helped," Albaugh said. "They were really comfortable with their wedges and that really paid off. Really everything we are doing right now helped us, like our workouts with our strength coach Kevin Hunter. We aren't just doing things because others people are doing them, we are doing them because they are helping us."
Gray shot a 2-over-par 74 in the second round Sunday to finish at 7-over 151 in a tie for fourth. It was Gray's second top-5 finish of the season.
"I'm really proud of Christina," Albaugh said. "A 74 is a great score on that golf course."
Junior Lauren Folgosa tied for 15th at 157, having shot rounds of 78 and 79. Sophomore Jillian Fraccola tied for 17th, one shot behind Folgosa with a pair of 79s. Freshman Jackie Evans tied for 47th at 164 (83-81) and junior Anne Sprick tied for 69th at 167 (80-87).
"We've been focusing on playing in a complaint free world," Albaugh said. "They're working on staying positive, and those who have been struggling a little with facing adversity are getting a handle on maintaining a positive outlook."
