NORFOLK, Va. -
The women's tennis team (12-4) was edged by nationally ranked (#55) Old Dominion, 4-3 yesterday in Norfolk, Va. The Spiders return to action Saturday versus UMass.
In doubles action, No. 2 Pamela Duran/Isabel Arana picked up the lone point for the Spiders with a convincing 8-2 win over Joanna Dobrowolska/Irina Dementyeva.
In singles play, the Monarchs and Spiders split three matches apiece, with the decisive match being the 6-4 tiebreaker in the third set of No. 2 match between Charleen Haarhoff and Erin Clark. Haarhoof took the match at 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
"This was a tough one to lose," said head coach Mark Wesselink. "We lost one match in a tiebreak and another in a 3rd set 6-4. It doesn't get much closer than that. We have been up on two ranked teams recently and fallen a little short. It's disappointing because this team deserves to be ranked. However, our eyes are still on the A-10 Championships. I think we are still getting better."
The Spiders host UMass Saturday at 10:30 a.m.
