PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Sophomore Christina Gray is tied for seventh as the Richmond women's golf team is in third place after the first round of the 2009 CAA Championship, played Friday at Callaway Gardens' Lake View course.
"I'm really proud of the team today," Richmond head coach Leighann Albaugh said. "It was really windy today and I think that the amount of tournaments that we played in the fall, where we had to face wind, really helped us prepare for today.
The Spiders shot a 310 to sit six shots behind No. 32 ranked Georgia State (304) and 10 shots back of first-place UNC-Wilmington (300). Towson is in fourth place at 314 and William & Mary is in fifth at 315.
"As excited as they are with the first round and the place we are in, we need to keep improving," Albaugh said. "They are all getting along really good. The team karma was fantastic this morning and all day long."
Gray shot a 6-over-par 76 on the par 70, 6,030-yard Lake View course, carding a 4-over 40 on the front and a 2-over 36 on the back nine. She is three shots off the leader Carmen Perez-Narbon of UNC-Wilmington, who carded a 3-over 73. Three players shot a 74 and two players fired 75s.
Sophomore Jillian Fraccola is tied for 12th at 7-over 77, having shot a 1-over 37 on the front nine and a 6-over 40 on the back. Junior Lauren Folgosa is tied for 16th at 8-over 78 with a 1-over 37 on the front and a 7-over 41 on the back nine.
Junior Victoria Kidder is tied for 18th at 9-over 79, going 3-over 39 on the front and 6-over 40 on the back. Junior Anne Sprick is tied for 36th after shooting an 85.
"Christina, Jillian, Lauren and Victoria played well," Albaugh said. "Victoria almost had an eagle on a 400-some par-4, she almost holed it from fairway with a three wood.
"One of our team goals was to have each others back, when someone's not playing so well, others have to be able to step up and fill the void," Albaugh said. "Anne wasn't playing well today and we stepped up and filled the void. Tomorrow Anne could play brilliantly, but somebody else could struggle, so we just have to be ready to step up. It's not about the me, it's about the we."
