PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga. - Sophomore Christina Gray is tied for fourth, four shots off the lead and the Spiders are in fourth after two rounds of the 2009 CAA Women's Golf Championship.
Richmond shot four strokes better in Saturday's second round of the CAA Championship, but James Madison put together the best round of the tournament to push the Spiders back to fourth place entering Sunday's final round.
"We played great, the girls really grinded it out today," Richmond head coach Leighann Albaugh said. "The front nine and the back nine are two very different golf courses. We play the front nine well and we were able to set ourselves up to get through the back nine. They worked hard to get through it."
The Spiders shot a 306 on Saturday after a 310 in Friday's first round to sit at 616 on the par-70, 6,030-yard Callaway Gardens' Lake View course. James Madison carded a 294, the lowest round of the tournament thus far, to jump from sixth place into third.
"You play the golf course, not the other teams," Albaugh said. "We are just worried about controlling the contrables and we can't control what other teams do. We just have to worry about us."
UNC-Wilmington is in first place with a 597 and Georgia State is in second place at 600. The Spiders are six shots ahead of fifth-place William & Mary (622).
Gray moved into a tie for fourth place after shooting a 3-over-par 73 in Saturday's second round. Gray, who had three birdies, has a 9-over 149 after shooting a 76 on Friday. She is four shots behind the leader, UNC-Wilmington's Carmen Perez-Narbon, two shots behind William & Mary's Sarah Whitney (147) and one shot behind Georgia State's Sandra Maier (148).
"Christina put everything into that round, she should be commended," Albaugh said. "On the last hole she made a par that was seriously the best par I have ever seen. She punched out of the woods from 70 yards out and put it on the green and then made the putt. Other coaches were coming up to me, telling me that was the best par they had ever seen."
Sophomore Jillian Fraccola is tied for 10th at 152 after shooting a 75 on Saturday. Fraccola had carded a 77 on Friday. Junior Lauren Folgosa is tied for 17th at 156 after shooting a 78 for the second-straight day, while junior Victoria Kidder is tied for 23rd at 159 having followed her opening-round 79 with an 80 on Saturday. Junior Anne Sprick is tied for 35th at 167 (85-82).
The third and final round of the 2009 CAA Championship will be played Sunday morning.
