Roush Medals Twice For Spiders Saturday At A-10 Track & Field Championship

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Heather Roush took gold in the javelin and silver in the discus, while Andrew Benford cruised to victory in the 3,000m steeplechase as the Richmond track & field team opened competition at the Atlantic 10 Championship Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C.
The Spider women scored 52.5 points are in second place heading to Sunday's final day - just one point back of first-place Dayton. The 26 points scored by the men was good for sixth.
Roush was seeded first in the javelin and her toss of 40.39m Saturday was good for the gold medal. The junior also medaled in the discus, taking the silver with her mark of 56.43m. Sophomore Monica Howard was third in the discus (45.93m) and seventh in the javelin (35.10m).
Three Spiders finished in the top-10 of the women's 10,000m, led by the silver-medal performance from freshman Katrina Spratford 36:45.51, followed by Julie Rechel in sixth (37:43.26) and Erin Lunny in ninth (38:40.78).
Also on the track, Jenn Ennis raced to a fifth-place finish in 3,000m steeplechase with her time of 11:00.56. Freshman Geneen Dore was ninth in the preliminaries of the 100m, just missing a spot in Sunday's final with her time of 12.53.
In other field events, Megan Ney was seventh in the high jump (1.60m) and fifth in the long jump (5.54m). Meaghan McGovern finished fourth in the hammer throw (52.33m).
On the men's side, Benford's gold-medal performance in the 3,000m steeplechase highlighted the Spiders' first day. The junior, who entered the event seeded first, was clocked in a time of 8:52.41. Garrett Graham was ninth in the steeple (9:28.49).
Two sprinters earned berths in Sunday's final as Tremayne Graham was clocked in 10.65 to finish third in the preliminaries, while Justin Rogers's 10.89 was the fifth-fastest on Saturday. Each will race Sunday in the finals.
Also on the track, Tim Quinn was seventh in the 10,000m (31:00.41), followed by Levi Grandt in ninth (31:14.72).
The field events saw Pierre Turner finish fourth in the discus (48.08m) and Chris Eccleston take fourth in the javelin 58.46m. Zack Owen was seventh in the javelin (56.41m). Lawrence Enweze was seventh in the high jump (1.89m).
Saturday's action at the Charlotte 49ers' Irwin-Bell Track Complex was delayed nearly two hours by rain and lightning.
Action resumes Sunday morning at Charlotte.
