
Men's Golf In Fifth At VCU Shootout

MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. - The Richmond men's golf team showed it can compete with some of the nation's best teams as the Spiders are in fifth place out of 14 teams at the VCU Shootout.
Richmond junior Sam Beach is tied for seventh at 2-under-par 142 and senior Robert Lindstrom is in a tie for 13th at 1-under 143 through 36 holes. The third and final round tees off on Tuesday at 8:45 a.m.
In a tournament which features seven teams ranked in the top 50 by Golfstat, the Spiders shot an 11-over 299 and a 3-over 285 to sit at 8-over 584. Richmond is just four shots behind second-place Wake Forest and three shots behind third-place Virginia and VCU. The Spiders are one shot ahead of Virginia Tech and four shots ahead of 18th-ranked Iowa and Penn State. UNCW is in first place at 571.
Richmond is also ahead of Top-50 teams Charlotte (12th), the four-time defending Atlantic 10 champions, and Maryland (13th).
"We didn't play a great first round, but with a few holes left we were in fourth," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We dropped a bit over the last few holes of the first round, but we really played well this afternoon."
Beach, who finished seventh in the Spiders' season opener, shot a 1-under 71 in both rounds Monday to lead the Spiders. Lindstrom shot a 2-over 74 in the opening round, but came back with a 3-under 69 in the afternoon.
"Sam put together a great 36-hole day and Robert really turned it on in the afternoon," Decker said.
Freshman Nick Austin is tied for 29th at 4-over 148, following up an opening-round 77 with a 1-under 71. Fellow freshman Daniel Walker shot a 77 in the morning round and a 2-over 74 in the afternoon to sit in a tie for 47th at 7-over 151.
Sophomore Brad Miller is tied for 79th at 159 (77-82). Sophomore Jack Lessing is tied for 64th at 154 (75-79) playing as an individual.
