Richmond had been in fifth entering the final round, just four shots behind national power Wake Forest, which was in second place.
"We played well on Monday and put ourselves in contention," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "We have to take this as a learning experience, we were right there and we just have to work on finishing."
Senior Robert Lindstrom tied for 15th at 3-over 219, posting his second-straight top-15 finish to start the year. Lindstrom shot a 2-over 74 in the first round, a 3-under-par 69 in the second round and a 4-over 76 in the final round.
"Sam and Robert are both playing very well for us right now," Decker said. "They are upperclassmen and are definitely leading by example on the course. We look forward to continued success from the two of them."
