CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Spider freshman Daniel Walker was tied for first and the Richmond men's golf team was in the lead after the first round of the Frank Landrey Invitational, played Monday at Spring Creek Golf Club.
The second round was not completed by the entire field due to darkness and will be finished on Tuesday morning, prior to the third and final round.
Richmond carded a 4-over 292 in the opening round, which has them three shots up on Gardner-Webb and five shots ahead of Liberty. Richmond's Atlantic 10 rivals St. Bonaventure (7th) and Saint Joseph's (12th) are also in the field of 14.
"We got off to a good start, but there's a lot of golf to be played," Richmond head coach Adam Decker. "Daniel put together a great round, Sam continues to play well and Michael was solid in the first round."
Walker cared a 1-under-par 71 in the first round, which puts him in a two-way tie for first with James Madison's Mike Smith. Walker, a freshman from Earlysville, Va., shot a 35 on the front nine and a 36 on the back.
Richmond juniors Sam Beach and Michael Shrader are tied for 10th with 73s. Beach shot a 3-under 33 on the front nine and a 4-over 40 on the back. Shrader carded a 37 on the front and a 36 on the back.
Senior Robert Lindstrom shot a 75 (37-38) and freshman Nick Austin had a 77 (41-36).
The Spiders will be looking for their third team tournament victory under Decker and Walker will try to become the fifth individual medalist in Decker's five years at Richmond.
