VERONA, N.Y. - Junior Sam Beach shot a 2-under-par 70 in the final round to lead the Richmond men's golf team to a final round 291 as the Spiders finished second at the Missouri Tiger Invitational at Turning Stone Resort in upstate New York.
Richmond shot a 301 in the opening round Sunday and a 305 in the second round, before carding the 3-over-par 291 in the final round Monday. Richmond used scores of 70, 73 and a pair of 74s from the final round.
"We really played well on Monday, to put up those kind of numbers on a course that hosts a PGA Tour event is impressive," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said.
Beach had shot a 4-over 76 in the first round and a 78 in the second, but finished the tournament with a 2-under 70 to finish at 8-over 224 in a tie for seventh place. The final round 70 was the second-lowest round of his career and his seventh-place finish was the best of his career.
"Sam really finished strong today," Decker said. "It is good to see him finish in the Top-10 in the first tournament of the year. We look for him to keep the momentum going this fall."
Richmond freshman Daniel Walker also finished in a tie for seventh at 224, following a first round 74 and second round 77 with a final round 73.
"For his collegiate debut, Daniel really put together a solid tournament," Decker said. "Not to many freshmen finish in the Top-10 in their first tournament and not too many teams have to freshmen finish in the Top-15 in their first event."
Junior Robert Lindstrom finished 10th (77-74-74=225), one shot behind Beach and Walker. Freshman Nick Austin joined his classmate Walker in the top-15, tying for 11th at 227 (74-79-74). Junior Michael Shrader took 14th at 228 (77-76-75).
The Spiders finished 12 shots behind tournament host and winner Missouri. Seton Hall placed third out of 13 teams, 10 strokes behind the Spiders at 907.
Richmond returns to action Sept 28-29 at the VCU Shootout at Hermitage Country Club.
