WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senior Ryan Butler made a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to lift Richmond to a 62-57 win over George Washington on Saturday at the Smith Center.
It was the second-straight year the Spiders won at GW and improved the Spiders' Atlantic 10 road record to 7-4 over the last two seasons.
Richmond Kevin Anderson, who scored 21 points and made four 3-pointers, connected on two free throws to give the Spiders (15-6, 4-2 Atlantic 10) enough cushion to secure their 15th win of the season. Anderson had made a pull-up jumper with 1:15 remaining, before GW tied the game at 57-57 on two free throws by Damian Hollis.
Junior Justin Harper finished with 14 points and senior David Gonzalvez added 11.
The Colonials, who led 30-28 at halftime, took a 42-35 lead on a free throw by Aaron Ware with 12:14 left. But in a game which included 12 lead changes and 10 ties, Gonzalvez drove baseline with the shot clock winding down and found Butler in the left corner for a three-pointer with 26 seconds left to break a 57-57 tie. Butler finished with eight points, four rebounds and three steals.
In a physical game, 52 fouls were called with each team whistled for 26. Richmond connected on 17-of-23 free throws and GW made 23-of-26 from the line. The Spiders made nine three points, led by Anderson's four, while the Colonials hit just two three-pointers.
Tony Taylor led George Washington with 16 points, going 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Bryan Bynes added 11 points for the Colonials.
