CHARLOTTE, N.C. -
Richmond (14-6, 3-2) fell to Charlotte (12-8, 5-1) in a rematch of last year's A-10 title game, 60-46 Tuesday night at Halton Arena.
Richmond broke open the game on fire, going up 11-3 in the first six minutes of play. The Spiders converted five 49er turnovers into easy buckets in this span. Charlotte sprang to life with a 9-0 run jumpstarted by the tandem of Charlotte's Ashley Spriggs and Shannon McCallum. The last 10 minutes of the second half featured six lead changes and six ties.
The 49ers started the second half on a 7-0 run to go ahead 35-28 with 15:36 remaining. The Spiders responded with a Nikita Thomas lay-up to cut the deficit to 35-30 with just under 15 minutes to play.
Charlotte scored two quick baskets to take its largest lead at 40-30 with 13:55 but the Spiders' fire was fueled after a rainbow three from Danielle Bell cut the score to 40-33. The Spiders scored six consecutive points to cut the Charlotte advantage to 40-39 with 8:47 remaining.
Both teams traded baskets until Atlantic 10-leading scorer Brittani Shells drained a three in the left corner to tie the game at 46-all with 5:28 left. The Shells three would prove to be Richmond's last basket as Charlotte scored the next 14 points to put the game out of reach.
Shells led Richmond with 15 points.
Richmond returns to the Robins Center Saturday for a 4:30 tip with Duquesne as part of a doubleheader with the mens' team.
