RICHMOND, Va. - Richmond head coach Chris Mooney, 38, was honored Thursday night as much for his community involvement as for the Spiders' 2009-10 season, earning a spot in Style Weekly's Top 40 Under 40.
Style Weekly, Richmond's alternative for news, arts, culture and opinion, selects the Top 40 Under 40 looking to honor "extraordinary young leaders and their contributions to the Richmond community."
As Style Weekly editor Jason Roop wrote, "they are the voices to which Richmond should listen more carefully. They're paying attention to the changes truly needed in the community. And we hope you're paying attention to them."
During Thursday night's awards dinner, Roop mentioned Mooney and the Spiders involvement in the Richmond community, such as working with the homeless through the CARITAS organization, performing a Special Olympics clinic and adopting a 14-year-old brain tumor survivor, Nathan Mwenda, through the Friend's of Jacyln Foundation.
Roop also cited Mooney withdrawing his name from the Boston College coaching search to sign an extension at Richmond, and the fact three players on last year's roster (including two starters) were from Richmond.
Mooney and the Spiders were also involved in a charity basketball game at Tuckahoe Middle School for the last three years that has raised over $6,000 for the Arthritis Foundation and ASK Foundation and started a partnership with St. Joseph's Villa For Children in August.
This is Mooney's second off the court award in the past year. He also received The Voice of the University Award, given to a faculty or staff member for being a "voice" that represents the University of Richmond in an outstanding manner.
