Team Notes
Richmond improved to 8-0 following an in-season loss since the 2006 season. The Spiders last back-to-back losses in season were four-consecutive defeats towards the end of the 2006 campaign.
The victory also improved Richmond to 19-7 versus Top 25 teams since the start of the 2007 season, and 10-5 versus Top 10 opposition.
Richmond has won two-consecutive games at Massachusetts and improved to 7-5 all-time versus the Minutemen at McGuirk Stadium. The Spiders have won three-straight in the series, trimming the UMass lead to 13-12 all-time.
Richmond is 19-4 in its last 23 road games versus FCS opponents.
Richmond started three true freshmen in the game - QB Montel White, WR Ben Edwards and OL Kurt Schmitz.
Richmond improved to 23-19 all-time in games decided by one point, including 4-1 in the last five one-point decisions. That marked the first 11-10 score in school history.
UMass entered the game ranked 21st in the FCS (second in the CAA) in rushing offense by averaging 208.4 yards per game. The Spiders limited UMass to a season-low 146 yards on the ground.
The game-winning drive by Richmond - eight plays, 60 yards in 1:42 - was the Spiders first winning drive in the final two minutes of a game since the 21-20 victory at Northern Iowa in 2008 NCAA Seminfinals.
Individual Notes
The game-winning TD catch by junior WR Tre Gray with nine seconds was his first TD of the season and the ninth of his career.
True freshman QB Montel White did not attempt a pass in the first half. In fact, five of his six passing attempts came on the game-winning drive including the first four completions of his career.
White was four-of-five on the drive for 47 yards and the 15-yard TD to Tre Gray. White also carried the ball once for 10 yards on that winning drive.
Senior LB Eric McBride finished with 11 tackles, two TFL, one sack a forced fumble and a pass breakup. McBride increased his career tackles total to 393 and moved to No. 6 on Richmond's all-time list. He needs nine more for fifth place and 14 more for fourth place.
McBride started his 49-consecutive game Saturday, extending the longest active streak in CAA Football.
Senior CB/KR Justin Rogers racked up 43 yards on his two kickoff returns. Already the Spiders' career record holder, he is just 64 yards shy of breaking the CAA Football career record of 2,433 held by Villanova's Brian Westbrook (1997-01).
Sophomore K Wil Kamin booted a 33-yard field goal and remained a perfect three-for-three on the season. The field goal try was Kamin's first since making two in the season-opener at Virginia.
Sophomore LB Darrius McMillian recovered both fumbles for the Spiders and set a career-high with 11 tackles (tied for team-high with McBride).
The nine tackles by senior S Colin Pehanick also marked a career-high, along with seven stops by redshirt freshman DE Brandon Scott.
