Men's Basketball Practice Underway For Highly Anticipated 2010-11 Season

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Coming off a NCAA Tournament season when the Spiders finished No. 24 in the nation in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll, the Richmond men's basketball team opened practice over the weekend.
The Spiders return 14 of 16 players off the team that tied a school record for wins with a 26-9 record, including a 13-3 mark in the Atlantic 10. Richmond advanced to the Atlantic 10 title game and was a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Among Richmond's 14 returning players, 2010 Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Kevin Anderson returns, having been named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top-50 watch list. The 2010 Associated Press Honorable Mention All-American is already eight on Richmond's career scoring list with 1,552 points after averaging 17.8 points per game last season.
The Spiders also return 6-foot-10 forward Justin Harper, an athletic wing player who has caught the eye of NBA prospects with his shooting range and athletic ability.
Senior center Dan Geriot has lost over 30 pounds since last season, and two years removed from tearing his ACL, Geriot will look to return to the form of his all-conference sophomore season.
Richmond also adds what Mooney has called the best recruiting class since he's been at Richmond. Guards Cedrick Lindsay and Wayne Sparrow and 6-foot-6, 275-pound forward Derrick Williams came from some of the top high school programs in the nation and are adding to Richmond's already impressive depth.
The Spiders open the season on Nov. 12, hosting The Citadel at 7 p.m. in the Robins Center.
Promotions for the season opener include a $5 ticket with a Military I.D. card, a Martins 2 for 1 ticket special and dollar hotdogs and small sodas. Season ticket holders also will receive a voucher to bring a friend for free to the opening game.
Richmond went 14-1 last season in the Robins Center last season, the best home record when playing double-figure home contests in school history.
