
Spiders In Third After 10-Under-Par First Round

POWELLS POINT, N.C. - With four Spiders under par the Richmond men's golf team shot the second-lowest team round in school history (-10) and to sit in third place after the first round of the Old Dominion/Outer Banks Classic.
The 10-under-par 278 is the second-lowest in school history, behind a 12-under-par round shot in the fall of 2003.
This year's team has three of the five lowest rounds in school history, including a 9-under 279 second round at the Richmond Intercollegiate, which is the third lowest round in school history and a 7-under 277 third round at the Marshall Invitational which is tied for the fourth lowest round.
Richmond is two shots behind second-place Liberty and eight shots behind first-place East Carolina (270) entering Monday's second round. The third round of the 54-hole tournament will be played Tuesday.
Senior Sam Beach led the Spiders with a 4-under-par 68 on the par-72, 6,535-yard course at Kimarlic Golf Club. Beach is tied for sixth place, but is just three shots off the lead. He has now shot six rounds below par this fall, all coming in his last seven rounds.
Senior Michael Shrader and sophomore Nick Austin and Daniel Walker all shot 2-under-par 70s and are tied for 17th. Junior Brad Miller is tied for 49th at 2-over 74.
Austin has shot five of 10 rounds this fall below par, Shrader has shot four rounds below par, including his last three and Walker has shot three rounds in the red, including two of his last three.
