UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -
Brittani Shells continued the sizzling start to her senior season, scoring a game-high 28 points as the Spiders beat Appalachian State, 88-78, at the Robins Center Wednesday night.
Fresh off an A-10 Player of the Week nod, Shells did not disappoint in the Spiders' home opener with a 28-point, 11-for-19 from-the-field night. Shells also drained 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
Shells' supporting case delivered again, with Abby Oliver notching a season-best 18 points, courtesy of 7-for-13 field goal accuracy. Kara Powell, who made her first start of the season, had a memorable night, going 5-for-7 from the field and scoring a season-high 14 points, just one point of matching her career best.
Goring again produced in the middle, scoring 13 points and pulling down a team-best eight boards. Genevieve Okoro gave solid minutes off the bench with eight boards also.
The Spiders were in control for much of the game, but the Mountaineers came up with two big scoring sprees to make the close the gap. The first happened at the 14:54 mark when Appalachian State went on a 10-0 run to get to within 58-53, but after a steal and layup by Shells the Spiders found some breathing room.
App. State would not go quietly as it again cut the deficit to 83-78 with two minutes left but Shells was there with the recovery points.
Richmond scored a whopping, season-high 31 points off Mountaineer turnovers, while grabbing a season-best 14 steals. Shells led all players with six swipes, just two of matching her career-high.
Richmond's 49 first half points were a season-high as was the 23 made free-throws. The 88 points scored the Spiders' highest point production in a winning effort since a 101-57 win over Howard Dec. 15, 2004.
The Spiders moved to 4-2 and head coach Michael Shafer is now a spotless 3-0 in the series with the Mountaineers.
Richmond stays at the Robins Center when it hosts (receiving votes) NC State Saturday at 2 p.m.
