ORLANDO, Fla. -
Richmond only trailed No. 25 Michigan State by eight at the break, but the Spartans scored 11 unanswered to start the second half to run past the Spiders, 76-52 Saturday afternoon in the final game of the UCF Thanksgiving Classic.
The Spartans came out of the gate hot, scoring the game's first seven points, but Richmond would counter with a 7-2 run spurred by Kara Powell three-pointer. Richmond got its first lead of the game at 11-9, when Brittani Shells drilled a jumper on the wing.
The score would change hands three times in the course of the next five minutes. Richmond's quickness seemed to unnerve the much bigger Spartans, but they relied on their go-to scorer, Kalisha Keane for the advantage. Keane nailed her first six buckets of the game and had 22 of her Spartans' 39 points at the break.
Richmond went into the locker room only trailing 39-31, but Michigan State started the second half on a tear, scoring 11 unanswered to put the Spiders back on their heels.
Richmond fought back to a 14-point deficit after a 10-2 run at the 9:08 mark but could get no closer.
After a quiet four-point performance in yesterday's game with Central Florida, Shells was back to her usual self, with a team-best 16 points, off 7-for-12 shooting. Crystal Goring grabbed a team-best nine boards, while scoring six. Abby Oliver chipped in with seven points.
Richmond plays at No. 12 Georgetown Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
