THE TEAM
Richmond defeated No. 8 Purdue 65-54 for the Spiders 5th victory over a ranked team in the last 6 chances and Richmond's 6th win over a ranked team in the last 9 games vs. ranked opponents. Three of those wins over ranked teams, including tonight's, were by double figures.
Richmond has won 5 of the last 7 games against BCS Conference teams and head coach Chris Mooney has eight victories over teams from BCS Conferences in six seasons at Richmond.
Richmond snapped Purdue's 23-game non-conference regular-season winning streak.
The Spiders improved to 8-0 in regular-season tournaments over the past two seasons, having won the South Padre Island Invitational last November and the Chicago Invitational Challenge Saturday. Richmond improved to 7-2 on neutral courts over the past two seasons, including 5-0 in regular-season neutral court games. Richmond also defeated No. 13 ranked Florida in the Orange Bowl Classic last December.
This was the highest ranked opponent the Spiders defeated since taking down No. 7 Syracuse in the 1991 NCAA Tournament. It is the third highest ranked opponent Richmond has defeated in school history. The Spiders defeated No. 6 Georgia Tech in 1986 and No. 6 George Washington in 1955.
Richmond is off to a 6-1 start for the second-straight season. Richmond was receiving votes in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 Polls since the preseason poll and finished last season ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press Poll.
Richmond held Purdue to 14 first-half points, the second time the Spiders have held a team under 15 points in the first half this season. The Spiders held Purdue without a field goal for over 14 minutes, from the 12:11 mark in the first half until the 17:35 mark in the second half.
THE PLAYERS
Senior Kevin Anderson scored a season-high 28 points, his 90th double-figure scoring game of his career, including his 83rd in the last 89 games. Anderson has 1,665 career points, which ranks sixth on Richmond's all-time career list. He had one steal that pulled him within two steals of Ryan Butler for fifth on Richmond's all-time career list. Anderson was named MVP of the Chicago Invitational Challenge.
Senior Justin Harper scored 14 points for his 40th-career double-figure scoring game, including his 13th in the last 17 games. Harper has 882 career points. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
Sophomore Darien Brothers scored 11 points for his third double-figure scoring game in the last four contests. Brothers made 4-of-7 field goals, including 3-of-5 three-pointers. Brothers has made 17-of-23 field goals, including 10-of-13 three-pointers in the last 4 games.
