UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond men's basketball team is ranked No. 25 in the nation by the Associated Press Top-25 Poll released Monday, just the second week the Spiders have been ranked since 1958.
Richmond won its 20th game of the season on Saturday at St. Bonaventure, improving to 20-6 and 9-2 in the Atlantic 10. The Spiders are in sole possession first place in the Atlantic 10 with five games to play.
Entering this season, Richmond had not received votes for the Top-25 since 1986, but the Spiders received votes in five different weeks this season, before making the jump into the Top-25 on Monday.
The last time Richmond was ranked in the Top-25 was on Jan. 28, 1986. This is just the seventh week in school history that the Spiders have been nationally ranked and just the second in the last 52 years. Richmond was ranked for three weeks in 1954-55 and for two weeks in 1957-58.
In seven days, Richmond defeated then No. 17, now No. 21 ranked Temple by 17 at home on Feb. 6, defeated Rhode Island (then 12th in the RPI) on the road 69-67 and took down St. Bonaventure 68-49 on the road Saturday.
Richmond is two spots outside of the Top-25 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll.
The Spiders host Fordham on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and George Washington on Saturday at 7 p.m.
