ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. -
Richmond fell to host St. Bonaventure 58-45 Wednesday afternoon at the Reilly Center. Abby Oliver led Spider scoring with 16 points.
The Bonnies jumped out to an early 8-0 lead as St. Bonaventure's Armelia Horton accounting for six of the first eight points. The Bonnies' pesky defense forced seven Richmond turnovers in the first five minutes of action. Richmond got its first basket of the half at the 13:57 mark after a Ryann Dannelly jumper.
The Dannelly jumper spurred a 6-0 run by the Spiders to cut the deficit to 8-6 at the 12 minute media. Oliver would give Richmond its first and only tie of the game at 11-all after a long range ball from the corner.
Bona would respond with three back-to-back three pointers from Jessica Jenkins to push its lead to 20-11 with 8:11 remaining. Richmond would cut the lead to five, at 22-17 after two free-throws from Oliver. St. Bonaventure again relied on the long range shot to push the lead to 25-17 with 4:21 left.
Richmond's bench was responsible for 17 of Richmond's 22 first-half tallies with Oliver leading the pack with nine. Dannelly came off the bench for a career-best six points.
The second half started sloppy, as neither team could connect on a bucket until Rachael Bilney drained a three to cut the Bona advantage to 32-25 at the 17:30 mark. Jenkins provided the rebuttal with a follow-up three to push the advantage back to double-digits.
Richmond would get to within nine twice but could not overcome the Bonnies. Bona's leading scorer Dana Mitchell was held to just five points in the first half but provided a big spark in the second with eight points off 4-of-7 shooting. Atlantic 10 leading scorer Brittani Shells saw limited minutes and ended the game with two points.
Richmond fell to 16-9 overall and 5-5 in league play.
The Spiders return to the Robins Center Sunday for Senior Day when they host the Hawks of Saint Joseph's for a 2:00 p.m. tip.
