Women's Basketball Secures 15th Win Of Season Against Fordham, 61-48

Richmond (15-7, 4-3) secured its 15th win of the season with a 61-48 victory over Fordham (8-15, 2-6) Wednesday afternoon at the Robins Center.
The Spiders came out attacking in the first five minutes of the game, going up 9-2 before the first media timeout. Richmond caused six Fordham turnovers in this span. The Spiders pushed their lead to 12-2 at the 13:04 mark, but was met with a 7-0 Ram run to cut the deficit to 12-9 with 10 minutes remaining.
"We pressed with the intention of generating energy and effort today," said head coach Michael Shafer. "Our kids responded well to our game plan which was to attack."
Danielle Bell nailed a three in the corner to jumpstart a 9-0 run to push the Richmond advantage to 21-9 with eight minutes left. Fordham responded with an 11-4 run to close the half at 25-20.
The Spiders caused 19 first-half Fordham turnovers and scored 16 of their 25 points off Ram mistakes.
"I thought we rotated well to get into a position to cause turnovers and make plays," said Shafer. "Our defense definitely created our offense this afternoon."
Fordham cut the deficit to 30-27 with 16:19 remaining but would get no closer. The Spiders took their first double-digit lead of the second half at 41-30 after a Shells jumper. Richmond continued to capitalize on Fordham turnovers, taking its largest lead at 53-35 with 4:15 remaining.
Richmond caused a season-high 34 Fordham turnovers. The Spiders cashed in a season-high 39 points off Ram mistakes.
Shells' 23 tallies marked the 12th game-high performance for the Delaware native. Katie Holzer and Rachael Bilney led bench scoring with nine points apiece.
Richmond plays at No. 7 Xavier Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. on ESPNU.
